What is the California Cash for Appliances Program ("statewide appliance rebate")?
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) allocated $35.2 million in federal funds for California to administer its own energy-efficient Cash for Appliances Program. This program is intended to save energy and water by replacing inefficient appliances with more energy-efficient models.
How does the statewide appliance rebate relate to water efficiency?
Many of the statewide appliance rebate program’s eligible energy-efficient clothes washers are also water-efficient. If you buy a state-qualifying model that also meets SoCal Water$mart’s water efficiency criteria within the statewide program’s time frame (see below), you may be eligible to claim both rebates!
Can I claim both the SoCal Water$mart and the statewide appliance rebate?
Yes! In order to be eligible for both rebates, qualifying models must meet SoCal Water$mart’s more stringent water efficiency requirement of 4.0 water factor (WF) or less, in addition to the statewide appliance program's minimum 2.0 modified energy factor (MEF) requirement.

How much is the statewide appliance rebate?
For a limited time beginning April 22, 2010, the statewide appliance rebate is $100 per qualifying clothes washer. Combine this with the SoCal Water$mart baseline rebate of $100 (effective March 15, 2010; baseline could be more depending on your water agency), and you could claim at least $200 per qualifying washer.
Check your local water agency’s offerings with the “Estimate Your Rebate” tool on the SoCal Water$mart website to determine your water agency's offerings.
What are the statewide rebate energy efficiency criteria vs. SoCal Water$mart water efficiency criteria?
In order to be eligible for both rebates, qualifying models must meet both programs' efficiency requirements:
- SoCal Water$mart’s more stringent water efficiency requirement is 4.0 water factor (WF) or less
- the statewide appliance rebate program's energy efficiency requirement is 2.0 modified energy factor (MEF) requirement or greater
Remember: the lower the water factor, the more water-efficient the model is. See the program’s high-efficiency clothes washers FAQs for more information.
What is the statewide appliance rebate offer period?
You must purchase a qualifying model on or after April 22, 2010 through May 23, 2010. Rebates are available on first-come, first-serve basis and will be processed as received until funds are depleted or May 23 whichever comes first. Rebate applications must be postmarked by June 25, 2010.
How can I apply for my state program rebate?
Consult the Cash for Appliances website at: http://cash4appliances.org for more information.
Are there any other important considerations for participation?
Consistent with California law, the state rebate program requires all old, inefficient clothes washers to be recycled with an eligible recycler. The California Energy Commission has a list of eligible recyclers on its website at the Cash for Appliances website: http://cash4appliances.org/consumers/recycle.html.
Can I get a state rebate for my purchase now?
Only if the purchase date falls within the state rebate program’s eligibility period starting April 22, 2010 through May 23,2010. Statewide rebates are not offered for purchases made before or after those dates.
Where can I get more information about the state program and how to participate?
Visit the program administrator’s state rebate site at: http://cash4appliances.org for information about funds remaining, how to participate, and more.
